Middlesbrough have signed midfielder, Finn Azaz from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee.
Azaz spent the first half of this season on loan at Plymouth Argyle where he has netted seven goals and created seven assists in 26 appearances this season, having been part of the Pilgrims’ promotion-winning League One team last season.
Villa however recalled him on Wednesday (3 January) following a reported £2million offer from Argyle’s Championship rivals, Boro, which Unai Emery’s Villains accepted for the 23 year-old with Plymouth unable to match the offer due to their financial position.
Speaking about Azaz’s arrival, Boro boss – Michael Carrick said: “I’m delighted to bring Finn to the club. He’s an exciting player who already comes with good experience. He’s a good season so far, and we’re really looking forward to working with him.”
Boro have confirmed that Azaz will wear the number 20 shirt and has signed a four-and-a-half year contract until June 2028.
Azaz previously began his career at West Bromwich Albion where he spent 2020-21 season on loan at Cheltenham Town, prior to his switch to Villa and spent the following season loaned out to Newport which yielded seven goals in 45 appearances.
Azaz won’t be eligible for Boro’s FA Cup tie against Villa tomorrow (6 January) and he is cup-tied in the Carabao Cup, meaning that he won’t be available for selection until Middlesbrough visit Millwall in the Championship on Saturday 13 January.
