ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Officials expect to score over $8 million dollars for not just the city of Albany but the Capital Region as a whole. Leaders called the event a win-win for all area merchants, bars, and restaurants.
“This is not just about the City of Albany. It’s about the region because we know there are a lot of hotels outside of Albany that are getting business. And these are the things that we should be having on a consistent basis in the capital city,” said President of the Albany Common Council Corey Ellis.
President and CEO of the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce Mark Egan said the city is receiving nationwide exposure.
“You can’t buy that exposure that our community is getting but what you can buy is food in our restaurants, you can buy rooms at our hotels and these next few days are really gonna help us on that side,” said Egan.
Discover Albany said the estimated $8.5 million is money they anticipate will be spent on lodging, food and transportation by the roughly 14,000 people who will be attending the games over the next few days. Officials expect it to generate more than the men’s tournament did last year.
“No offense to the gentleman here but even if you don’t believe that girls run the world they are definitely running this weekend in downtown Albany,” said Rebecca Hughes, with the Downtown Albany BID.
Officials said this shows them the potential for downtown Albany and want to see more of these big events in the capital city.
