New traffic signal causing some trouble in Rancho San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – New traffic signals going in at Fury Lane and Calle Verde in Rancho San Diego are causing a stir for neighbors who live closest to the intersection.
“It was a shock. When you sit in our front room, we look out and we see these big, huge posts. There’s nothing we can do about it,” Mary Barrett said.
Barrett has lived in the area for 35 years and her home backs up to the intersection.
“Depreciated our house value because you’ve got this in the middle of our backyard,” said Barrett when speaking about the large poles.
Barrett says her family is unhappy with the size of the signals, lights shining into the backyard, and also has privacy concerns over the newly installed cameras.
A neighbor across the street sent FOX 5 photos from their backyard also echoing the same sentiment.
Another nearby resident who did not want to give her name, acknowledged the new signals as a positive saying, “They’re big, but I think they’re needed. The stoplights are needed just for traffic control and the speeding.”
Barrett and others feel the stop signs previously in place helped control speed and accidents.
The board of supervisors approved the project in 2021 and according to the county, the traffic signals are a standard size set by the state. The project is also close to a nearby elementary school and pre-school.
In a statement to FOX 5, the county says: “There are some things we can do to help shield nearby homes from the signal and streetlights. This includes placing blinds and/or louvres on the signal heads to focus traffic lights toward oncoming traffic, and shields on street lamps that focus light downward.”
“I don’t see them taking these down, but I would like some kind of mitigation to make this better for the people that it’s infringed on their privacy. We’re all for safety, but I think this is just overboard,” Barrett said.
The county says the project is scheduled to be completed March 13. Neighbors plan to have a meeting out near the intersection Friday morning with some representatives from the county to further voice their concerns.
