The Niagara Regional Police Service’s (NRPS) homicide unit says it is investigating the death of taxi driver in St. Catharines, Ont.
Const. Phil Gavin told CBC Hamilton the unit is using its many resources to uncover the circumstances around the 58-year-old man’s death.
NRPS previously said officers responded to a call from paramedics at 4:43 a.m., on Sept. 23 on Eastchester Avenue near Lorne Street. That’s in the Queenston neighbourhood, not far from the city’s core.
The cab was “available” and had no paying passenger before the driver died, police say.
A passerby found the taxi driver on the ground beside his parked taxi, which was on the road with an open door, according to police.
He was unconscious with a critical injury and was taken to an out-of-region hospital.
Gavin said the man died of his injuries on Sept. 27, in the early afternoon.
It doesn’t appear to have been a robbery or a “targeted incident.” Gavin said police aren’t sharing more details about the injury because only a few people would know the circumstances.
Police are encouraging anyone in the area with security cameras, doorbell cameras or dashboard cameras to review their footage for any suspicious activity between 3 and 5 a.m. on Sept. 23.
Gavin said people should check their footage sooner rather than later in case it gets overwritten.
