Insiders have agreed on rumours about the specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2, which they claim has been ready to launch since 2022.

The Nintendo Switch 2’s widely reported delay to early 2025 has made this year’s gaming calendar look very empty. Not only that but it means we’re probably going to have to endure many more months of speculation about the console.

We’ve already heard it might feature an 8-inch LCD screen, be backwards compatible, and have an overall design that’s largely ‘iterative’ over the original Switch. Meanwhile, information leaked from an Nvidia hack in 2022 already appears to have outed the technical specifications.

The latter has now been reaffirmed by sources at Nvidia, who have also made other claims about the console’s power and how long it has been ready for launch.

According to an Nvidia source, the Nintendo Switch 2 ‘has been done since late 2022’. Recent reports suggested the console has been delayed in order to bolster its software line-up, so the idea that the hardware is already ready makes sense in that context.

The same source also claims a Digital Foundry breakdown of the T239 processor is an ‘almost entirely correct summary’ of what is included in the Switch 2, which describes it as having Ampere GPU architecture, a 128-bit memory bus, and LPDDR5 memory.

Another source at Nvidia states that the console will include up to 16GB of LPDDR5 memory and have a Samsung 8nm processing node, which is not the latest tech but is cited as being cost efficient and widely available in regards to manufacturing capacity.

Based on the these specifications, Moore’s Law Is Dead speculates the Switch 2 could be ‘better than a Steam Deck’ and comparable to an Xbox Series S in terms of ‘raw performance’. He does note, however, that this is the best case scenario, so corners may be cut in order to keep the cost down.

If true though, this would appear to support previous rumours that the next Switch will be capable of running PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X titles – albeit likely with some downgrades.

Others, however, have suggested it will be less powerful than the PlayStation 4, which could end up being technically true in terms of tech specs but not necessarily in terms of the how games actually look and perform.

Nintendo has not officially announced anything about the Switch 2, but these specifications certainly make sense for a company that often prioritises affordability over power.
