He loves electrics, but Election affidavit reveals NItin Gadkari does not personally own any electric car!

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is one of those ministers who are constantly pushing and promoting electric cars and alternative fuel options to reduce pollution. We have also seen him being driven around in electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars. The Union Transport Minister has now filed an affidavit for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Surprisingly, the Transport Minister doesn’t own any EVs. According to the affidavit, the minister owns a 2016 Honda CR-V, Isuzu D-Max, and a 1994 model HM Ambassador.

Which cars does he own?

According to the affidavit, Nitin Gadkari owns an HM Ambassador sedan valued at Rs 10,000, a Honda CR-V worth Rs 16.75 lakh, and an Isuzu D-Max pickup worth Rs 12.55 lakh. The D-Max was added to the minister’s garage in 2024.

Additionally, Nitin Gadkari also mentioned that his wife, Kanchan Nitin Gadkari, owns a 2014 Toyota Innova valued at Rs 5.25 lakh, a Mahindra worth Rs 4.10 lakh, and a Tata Intra commercial pickup worth Rs 7.19 lakh.

However, we have never seen the minister travel in any of these vehicles. It is quite likely the vehicles are for use of the family, while the minister himself uses official government vehicles, and the occasional electric or hybrid to travel.

Nitin Gadkari’s Cool Rides

We have seen him use a BMW iX electric luxury SUV. The electric SUV with a registration number MH31 FU 8181 is actually registered under the name of Nagpur-based CIAN agro industries. Nitin Gadkari, who is currently the Union Minister for Transport and Highways, is also the Managing Director of the firm. It is not clear if the minister actually bought it under the firm’s name or if the firm actually bought it for their own use.

Other than this, we have also seen him use a Toyota Mirai hydrogen-powered car. He used this car to arrive at the parliament a couple of times. Even this car does not belong to him as it was imported by Toyota Kirloskar and is registered under their name. We have also seen him in a video where he showcased an Innova Hycross where he told that this car uses flex fuel and is also the strong hybrid version.

Nitin Gadkari recently made an announcement in an interview that he wants to completely eliminate petrol and diesel cars from the country. Do note that he has expressed a desire, and it is not exactly a threat to ban them – these statements are often misinterpreted by the automobile media.

He wants people to use electric and hydrogen-powered cars, which are more environmentally friendly. While he vowed to get rid of over 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles completely, he didn’t give an exact timeline on when he plans to get this vision of his implemented.

He also made another announcement in an interview where he shared his willingness to bring down the GST for hybrid cars in India to promote the sales. If his proposal is accepted, the prices of all hybrid cars in India could go down by up to Rs 5.5 lakhs!

Nitin Gadkari’s first vehicle that he ever owned was a Luna. He spoke about his first vehicle during the launch of the electric version of Luna or Kinetic E-Luna. He even said during the launch that despite owning several vehicles, Luna remains very close to his heart. While the minister is completely promoting the use of electric cars and bikes, it would have set a good example if the minister had himself bought electric cars under his name.
