Nowadays, the perilous trend of staging drag races and performing stunts using cars and SUVs on public roads with the aim of gaining viral attention on social media platforms is escalating. Simultaneously, law enforcement teams have become more proactive in addressing such incidents by tracking and penalizing the offenders. A recent case involves a popular YouTuber who admitted to being penalized by Noida police after his video of drag racing in a Ford Endeavour gained traction on social media.

In one of his recent confession videos on his YouTube channel, “Arun Panwar,” he disclosed that he had been penalized by Noida police subsequent to uploading a video depicting a drag race between his Ford Endeavour and another vehicle. Within 24 hours of uploading the video on YouTube, he received a call from a Noida Police official who informed him that they had identified his vehicle and obtained his contact details.

Given that the video showcased a drag race on a public road, wherein the Endeavour was observed overspeeding at 150 kmph, the Noida Police official instructed the YouTuber to bring the vehicle to the police station within the jurisdiction of his SUV’s registration office. In his defense, the YouTuber informed the police official that he was approximately 1000 km away from the police station and might not be able to reach in time. Consequently, the police official warned him to bring his car to the station promptly, failing which his vehicle would be seized, and its registration canceled.

In response to this warning, the YouTuber brought his Ford Endeavour the following day, and after his appeals, the police officials agreed not to confiscate his vehicle. Nevertheless, he was fined Rs 5,000 for overspeeding. To document the incident, the police officials photographed his Endeavour outside the police station and issued a challan, which the YouTuber displayed in the video, blurring out personal details.

Police can use social media video as evidence

Concluding the video, the YouTuber stated that he would refrain from engaging in such high-speed reckless driving activities and urged his followers not to participate in such behaviors. While numerous YouTubers create disturbances on public roads and inconvenience other motorists in pursuit of likes and popularity, only a few openly take responsibility and admit their mistakes.
In most metropolitan cities, there is a comprehensive CCTV network closely monitored by a team of police personnel. These cameras are used to track violations and issue challans based on the vehicle’s registration number. However, it is not uncommon for online challans to be incorrect due to faulty number plates. Fortunately, wrong challans can be contested through the traffic police’s redressal portal.

In recent times, the government and authorities have made efforts to increase the amount of fines for traffic violations. This increase is aimed at reducing the number of violations and making the roads safer for everyone.

India has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world, including a high ratio of fatal accidents. It is often due to reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic rules that many road users lose their lives. The surveillance system is in place to deter dangerous maneuvers on the roads and ultimately decrease the number of such incidents.

By enforcing stricter regulations and increasing penalties, the goal is to encourage responsible and safe driving practices, ultimately saving lives and enhancing road safety.
