An MLA from one of Manitoba’s northern ridings will be the next Speaker of the provincial legislature.
Flin Flon MLA Tom Lindsey, who was the only nominee for the role, was announced as the new Speaker Wednesday.
He’s represented the Flin Flon riding since 2016.
Before the NDP were elected into government last month, Lindsey had also served as the NDP’s critic for natural resources and northern affairs.
He’s also previously worked in the mining industry, according to his biography on the NDP website.
As Speaker, Lindsey will serve as referee in legislature debates and will play host to dignitaries when they visit the building.
He’ll be acclaimed Thursday.
The role was previously held by veteran Progressive Conservative MLA Myrna Driedger, who didn’t run for re-election in the recent election. Driedger had been an MLA since 1998 and served as speaker since 2016.
