Although the Golden State has lovely weather, lots of great coastal locations, and is home to more hot rods than any place on earth, low-tech racing events like the RPM Nationals are becoming extremely rare to find in California. It’s just an expensive place to get the proper state & county permission, event insurance and permits in place to facilitate competition hot rods running wild, as they were meant to. Fortunately the Nats take place on privately-controlled (and fairly remote) land, and that is the saving grace for this killer flatheads-only drag racing event. I was incredibly sad to miss it this year, but don’t make my mistake. If you can make your way to the central coast (not far from Paso Robles!) in late September, this traditional hot rod race is well worth it.
