1960 Mercury: The Odd One

I’ve shared before about the boldness of 1960 factory designs, in Detroit’s pivotal transition year away from the more bulky and flashy 1950s designs, and into the longer and wider car shapes of the 60s. A glaring omission that I left off that list was the extremely unusual 1960 full size Mercury. They have a one-year-only design that you just don’t see on the street too often (the ’61 Merc styling was similar in the front, but the rear end was totally restyled). Talk about the makings of a cool mild custom; the ’60 Merc comes stock with a cool grille featuring oddly-wide headlight spacing, minimum chrome trim, and taillights that look to be stolen from a Batmobile prototype.
