The 1954 General Motors Motorama

The Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City premiered the Motorama for that year on January 26th, 1954 (an astonishing 70 years ago!), and incredibly, nearly 2 million visitors attended the show. Among the “New for ’54” production vehicles from Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac were the General Motors experimental dream cars. These concepts were mind-blowing in their time and world-class examples of what America could built, when they let their designers lead the way. For 1954, GM brought the big guns of coolness, like the Chevrolet (Corvette-based) Nomad concepts, the Pontiac Bonneville Special, Oldsmobile F-88 & Cutlass, the Buick Wildcat II, and Cadillac’s El Camino, La Espada, and Park Avenue trio. The General also displayed the wildest space-age concept of them all: The gas turbine-powered XP-21 Firebird I.
