Patriots’ defense gets bad news ahead of Week 3 game vs. Jets

The Patriots will play their second straight game without starting cornerback Jonathan Jones.
Jones (ankle) and rookie offensive lineman Sidy Sow (concussion) were ruled out for the Patriots’ Week 3 contest against the Jets, the team announced Saturday afternoon. That means Jones and Sow did not travel ahead of Sunday’s game.
With Marcus Jones and Jack Jones on injured reserve and Jonathan Jones out, that leaves rookies Christian Gonzalez and Ameer Speed plus Myles Bryant and Shaun Wade as the only cornerbacks on the 53-man roster. The team also has William Hooper, Breon Borders and Azizi Hearn on the practice squad. The team can sign or promote Hooper, Borders or Hearn by Saturday at 4 p.m.
Hooper has spent the most time with the Patriots, though Borders has the greatest NFL experience.
Marcus Jones hit IR this week with a torn labrum. Jack Jones was placed on injured reserve ahead of Week 1 with a hamstring injury and could be activated any time after Week 4. He was spotted by reporters on Friday moving well.
The good news is the Patriots are playing a Jets team led by quarterback Zach Wilson, who’s one of the least efficient passers in the NFL. They do need to worry about top wide receiver Garrett Wilson, however. Gonzalez could match up with Wilson in a battle of recent first-round picks.
The team will have nine available offensive linemen in starting left tackle Trent Brown, left guard Cole Strange, center David Andrews and right guard Mike Onwenu plus offensive tackles Calvin Anderson, Vederian Lowe and Tyrone Wheatley Jr. and guards/centers Jake Andrews and Atonio Mafi.
