AUSTIN (KXAN) — During an Austin City Council work session Tuesday, city staff brought forward possible development opportunities for locations near the Austin Convention Center.
Based on the slideshow presentation from the Austin Convention Center Department, the proposal could include hotels, multi-family housing developments and ground-floor retail.
The proposal is in the early stages of a three-phase process, with the presentation of market analysis findings. The current proposal projects construction would start in 2026.
Council feedback will be welcome in various engagement activities, including 15 stakeholder interviews, an online survey with 55 participants, as well as a community open house, according to the presentation.
Developer solicitation is the next step the City is expected to take with the expansion project, according to the presentation.
What’s next for the Austin Convention Center?
In May 2023, the City of Austin said it was moving forward with the process of expanding the convention center.
The City plans to close the convention center for construction after South by Southwest in 2025.
