Police confirm fatality in Catskill crane accident

CATSKILL, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Catskill Police Department have confirmed a fatality in a crane accident that took place near the Catskill Marina on Monday. Police say Branden Luciano, 36, of Germantown, was electrocuted after crane cables struck an electrical wire.

According to police, the preliminary investigation determined that on March 25, crane cables became connected with powerlines in the area, electrifying the cable and the hook at the end of the crane. Luciano was on the ground at the time and came into contact with the hook, resulting in him being electrocuted.

The crane also caught on fire during the incident. Firefighters were able to put out the flames after Central Hudson cut power to the lines.

The investigation remains ongoing. Catskill Police are being assisted by the Catskill Fire Company, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the state Labor Department. Stay with NEWS10 as this story continues to develop.
