WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) — On Tuesday, the Watervliet Police Department started an investigation after getting reports of shots fired around 1 p.m. in the area of 23rd Street from 2nd to 3rd Ave. Police secured the scene, and no injuries have been reported.
“Shortly thereafter, we had information that took us to this location on 7th Avenue,” Watervliet Police Department Chief Joseph Centanni Watervliet said. “We are not certain if both incidents are connected.”
Later that afternoon, a section of the Watervliet was closed off for hours due to heavy police presence at a residence not too far away from the incident.
“I lived here my whole life,” Watervliet resident Makenzie Ryan said. “So it’s kind of upsetting that stuff like this will happen, especially someplace that’s supposed to be good.”
It was a situation that had all hands on deck, with multiple police agencies, including Colonie’s SWAT Team, Menands and Green Island Police Departments, and the Albany County Sheriff’s Department, all on the scene for over three hours.
“During the investigation here, we located at least one handgun, and a search warrant was executed on a house here on 7th Ave,” Chief Centanni said. “We have much work to do. The case actually begins now. The hard work begins now, but we are going to continue to conduct our searches, develop information, and interview witnesses and suspects, and I am hopeful that we’ll have more for you in the coming days.”
Roman Soler is still a bit on edge.
“It’s very concerning,” Soler said. “And I hope this situation gets detained and we figure out what’s going on.”
Melanie Dumers is breathing a sigh of relief that no one was hurt.
“I’m more worried about who’s involved and if they’re going to be safe,” Dumers said. “If the officers will be safe. It’s unfortunate when these things happen.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact (518) 270-3833 or submit an anonymous tip via this form. Motorists are asked to seek alternate routes while the investigation is underway.
