Rain scatters San Diego’s weekend forecast: how much is expected?

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/ KUSI) — You can expect bouts of drizzle over the weekend across San Diego County, according to the National Weather Service.
Light scattered showers — between 0.01 to 0.03 inches — were felt in some locations in the region Thursday morning, a precursor for continued dampness into the weekend.
Meteorologists have said the marine layer is expected to maintain depth overnight, with more drizzle and light showers expected Friday morning. When it comes to degrees, NWS expects below average temperatures Thursday through the weekend.
This comes as a large low pressure system over the northeast Pacific moves slowly inland along the Southern California, NWS explained in Thursday’s area forecast discussion.
What does this mean for San Diego County?
Rain
Periodic weekend precipitation from the coast to the mountains can be expected Friday through Sunday. Though rainfall is expected to be” scattered and showery,” bouts of light to moderate rain is also expected. NWS said rain rates could peak around 0.25 inches per hour at times. Saturday shows the best chance of rain across the region.
Wind
The forecast also predicts gusty winds for mountains areas, the desert slopes and bottoms. NWS said the strongest winds are expected on Saturday evening into Sunday as the low pressure system moves east. Peak winds gusts could be between 70 and 80 mph on mountain ridges, with gusts between 40 and 60 mph possible in the desert.
“These strong gusty winds will make travel difficult at times, mainly for high profile vehicles traveling in those windy locations and for all vehicles traveling in the mountains,” NWS warned.
Snow
It was also noted in the area forecast discussion that periods of snow are possible in elevations above 4,500 to 5,000 feet over the weekend. Nonetheless, meteorologists have said it’s “unlikely” that San Diego County’s mountains will see accumulating snowfall during this storm system.
Looking ahead
Come Sunday, the forecast shows showers tapering off by afternoon. To start the week, Monday and Tuesday shows drier conditions with a few degrees of warming, NWS noted. However, below average temperatures are still expected.
By the middle of next week, more precipitation is possible. Meteorologists are waiting out assertions as weather conditions develop in the coming days.
