Rams signing Carson Wentz to back up Matthew Stafford in surprise move

The Los Angeles Rams are signing Carson Wentz, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The veteran quarterback is expected to back up Matthew Stafford, who missed last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers with a thumb injury, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
While his status still isn’t official, Stafford is expected to return Week 11 against the Seahawks after the Rams’ bye week.
If Stafford can’t go, it appears Wentz, 30, will get another shot as a starting quarterback after Brett Rypien, who started the disastrous 20-3 Week 9 loss to the Packers, threw for just 130 yards on 13-for-28 passing and an interception.
The team managed just 187 yards, the fewest they’ve had in a game this season.
Wentz was let go by the Washington Commanders in February after appearing in eight games during the 2022 season, throwing for 1,755 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions.
The North Dakota State product opened the 2022 season as the Commanders’ starting play-caller, but after a midseason injured reserve stint, Wentz was replaced as Washington’s QB1 by Taylor Heinicke.
Wentz briefly reclaimed the starting job late in the season but was replaced by Sam Howell in Week 18 after the team was eliminated from playoff contention.
Wentz was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.
During his sophomore season with Philadelphia in 2017, Wentz made the Pro Bowl and finished third in the AP MVP voting despite missing the team’s final three games with a torn ACL.
Wentz has struggled to recapture the same form he had in 2017 as he dealt with injuries during his final few years with the Eagles and bounced around the league over the last two seasons.
