Members of the Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign (BHPSC) asked residents to come down with their towels and swimming costumes to join in the international event on Saturday, August 26.

It was part of an international day of solidarity called Swim With Gaza, with events taking place from Mexico to South Africa, Spain to Greece, in seas, rivers, lakes, and pools.

Brighton’s event drew 40 people and was live streamed across the globe.

The group gathered in the afternoon and were at the beach with Palestine flags, banners and live music.

“In spite of the blustery weather, about 15 hardy souls went in,” said Steve Johns, a member of BHPSC.

“We were joined by groups across Sussex who held their own events in Hastings, Eastbourne and Worthing.

“A lot of people got involved and we have raised awareness about the importance of teaching swimming to children in Gaza who have the sea right on their doorstep.

“Many children there don’t have this vital life skill.”

Swim With Gaza has raised more than £5,000 to fund ten free swimming lessons for 100 Gazan children whose families cannot afford them.
