Glasgow grandpa dies in fire leaving family ‘destroyed’

Gerard Chalmers passed away after the blaze broke out yesterday at a flat on Ardgay Street in Shettleston.

The 59-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and investigations have been launched by police.

Now loved ones are paying their respects to the “one in a million” man who “would do anything for anyone.”

The Glasgow Times got permission from a member of Gerard’s family to share the following touching tributes.

His nephew said: “Give your wee sister a big hug from me rest in power uncle G you and my mum and fred are together again.”

Another loved one posted: “I have absolutely no words at all. RIP Gerard Chalmers an amazing guy with nothing bad to say about anyone.

“Would do anything for anyone – an absolutely doting granda and I was so lucky to have a man like you in our life xx.”

His other nephew shared: “Absolutely destroyed. Heartbroken to say the least. Rest easy uncle G you were one in a million.”

Another tribute said: “Thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.”

Others posted: “God bless boys rest easy Gerard get that parcel force van in the sky big fella rip.”

Another posted: “Absolute liberty,known Gerry since a was a boy RIP buddy.”

Someone else replied: “Thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.”

The incident saw 999 services swarm the property on Saturday evening as police, ambulance, and fire crews were pictured at the scene.

The entire area had been cordoned off while the emergency services launched a probe into the fire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said three fire appliances were deployed following an alert at 5.33pm.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called to a report of a fire at a property on Ardgay Street in the Shettleston area of Glasgow, around 5.55pm on Saturday, December 9, 2023.

“Emergency services attended and a 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His next of kin are aware.

“A joint investigation is being carried out with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”
