Police bombarded with calls from furious drivers due to roadworks on A27

The Hampshire County Council roadworks are taking place on the A27 and the £10m scheme will see a new dedicated bus lane between Portsmouth and Fareham.

The travel disruption has seen the journey times in the area increase by more than 30 minutes and angry motorists have been a common sight in the area since work started in October 2023.

Residents started calling Hampshire police to complain about vehicles parked across the yellow box junctions near the roadworks – which is stopping the flow of traffic.

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary have now taken to Facebook to urge residents to be patient as it works to use enforcement action to deal with these cheeky parked cars.

An officer wrote on Facebook: “This post concerns… what is quite an emotive issue at present in Portchester and Fareham.

“We have received complaints in relation to the current road works on the A27 at the Down End Road junction and Cams Hill junction.

“These roadworks are being managed by Hampshire Highways and the police have no direct control over these.

“We have had complaints over vehicles parked across the yellow box junctions which then leads to other vehicles doing the same leading to the junction becoming blocked.

“This is covered by rule 174 of the Highway Code.”

The Highway Code explains:

  • You must not enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear.
  • However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.
  • At signalled roundabouts you must not enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

The officer added: “Due to recent incidents we will be looking at enforcement action for drivers who continue to contravene this.

“I appreciate that this is a difficult situation and I would please ask drivers to be patient and considerate.”
