Coastguard search for paddleboarders cut off by tide at Beachy Head

Reports came in of “cries for help” near Beachy Head lighthouse at 3.15pm on Monday (September 4) with emergency service dispatched to the scene shortly after.

Crews at sea worked with coastguard personnel on land and found the paddleboarders, with an inshore lifeboat bringing the pair to shore.

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard said: “The coastguard was called at about 3.15pm today to report that a woman had been heard shouting for help near Beachy Head Lighthouse.

“Newhaven and Eastbourne coastguard rescue teams, Newhaven RNLI all-weather lifeboat and Eastbourne RNLI inshore lifeboat were tasked to investigate.

“Two paddleboarders were located, a man and a woman.

“They had been caught by the tide and cut off. They were taken to safety by the lifeboats assisted by the coastguard teams. Both are safe and well.”
