The live stream shared by the vigilante group on Facebook on Thursday evening show them speaking to the man, who was wearing a Liverpool football shirt, on a road in Sholing.
The video has since been watched by almost 100,000 people and widely shared on the social media platform.
Hampshire Police has now confirmed to the Echo that officers were called to the scene at 10.25pm on Thursday evening.
Officers arrested a 38-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of engaging in sexual communication with a child.
He remains in police custody as of Friday afternoon, according to a police spokesperson.
