Council leader, Susan Aitken recently spoke to the mayor of Dhaka North at a UN conference about Scotland’s proposals to “onshore” textile manufacturing and was reminded that this needed to be done in a way that was sustainable for his citizens.

The issue was raised at a recent full council meeting by Green councillor Holly Bruce who wanted to know what work had been done on developing a “sustainable” fashion economy in Glasgow.

Councillor Susan Aitken informed members that discussions had been ongoing with the UK fashion and textiles council and that technology was developing all the time.

She said: “I would say while there is a real imperative to onshore the procurement and manufacturing of textiles as much as possible, I think it is important to remember that textile manufacturing is absolutely crucial to the well-being and livelihood of families in parts of the world like Bangladesh.

“I was lucky to spend some time with the mayor of Dhaka North from Bangladesh just over the last couple of days at a UN event and this was a matter we were discussing.

“He certainly understands why countries like Scotland would like to onshore our textile manufacturing as much as possible but also wants us to do so in a way which is sustainable for his citizens and particularly for the many millions of women in countries like Bangladesh who do rely on manufacturing to feed and support their families.

“That is something we have to bear in mind as we approach our work in this area.”
