Detectives search for Lynda Spence’s body after killer ‘pinpoints’ area

Killer Colin Coats pinpointed a remote location near Dunoon in Argyll which has resulted in two separate excavations, the Scottish Sun reports.

One took place at a new location next to Tarsan Dam and another at a site four miles away at Auchenbreck, which has already been searched.

Glasgow Times:

But both searches have failed to find any trace of Spence.

The 27-year-old financial advisor was kidnapped from the street where she lived in Broomhill and taken to a flat in West Kilbride where she underwent 14 days of torture at the hands of Coats and Philip Wade.

They murdered her around the date of April 28, 2011, and both men were found guilty and given life sentences – but her body has never been found.

Legal investigator Scott Forbes led a team to the first site at Tarsan Dam last month.

He said: “It’s been a lengthy investigation which has included hundreds of hours of consultation with Coats.

“We had permission from the landowner to search and kept the police fully up to speed with what we were doing. They in turn informed Lynda’s family.

“We used a five-tonne digger at the site which carefully scraped away the topsoil. We spent three days painstakingly doing this.

“When the dig turned up nothing we went back to the Auchenbreck site the police had already dug. An area half the size of a football pitch was pinpointed and carefully excavated using a 15-tonne digger.

“Coats gave us very specific instructions. He was able to describe where he washed his hands.

“ When he heard where we were he told another inmate we were at ‘the very spot’ and ‘were standing on her’.

“But sadly we didn’t find Lynda. Despite the horrific nature of his crime, I found Coats honest in his endeavour to find Lynda.

“His cellmate even told us how excited he was when he heard where we were.

“In 2016 trees were cut down in the area which we believe moved the soil. We believed her remains succumbed to foxes and other wildlife as well as the elements.

“This is the end of our investigations.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of excavation work taking place and officers are liaising with those involved. Lynda’s family has been updated and we continue to support them.”
