Sussex Police were called to Ewhurst Wood, just off Ifield Avenue in Crawley, at 5.25pm on Tuesday.
A cordon was put in place and forensic teams took samples of the remains.
The force has now confirmed they are animal body parts and not human.
The cordon remained in place yesterday while forensic tests took place to “confirm the contents of the bag”.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: We attended an area off Ifield Avenue in Crawley on Tuesday afternoon after a report of bags filled with what appeared to be remains.
“Experts have now confirmed that the recovered items are animal body parts, not human.
“A police cordon was in place overnight as a precaution while forensics tests were completed, and officers have thanked the public for their patience while this work was carried out.”
Crawley Borough Council confirmed it was not assisting police with the incident.
