SCHUYLERVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — “You’re my soul sister and my heart. I hope to see you again soon someday,” said Kaylin’s aunt, Kassiah Winnie.
“I love you missy Kaylin, every day.” said Kaylin’s young niece.
Dozens of people showed up to the Fort Hardy Park in Schuylerville to remember 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis who was shot and killed when she made the wrong turn in a wrong driveway with her friends one year ago, today.
The man responsible for Kaylin’s death now in prison after a jury of his peers found him guilty of murder.
“Justice was served, and I do thank everyone. The jury, the judge, and the prosecution and everyone who did such a wonderful job with it. It doesn’t erase any of the pain that we feel. Even now, and probably forever,” said Kaylin’s grandmother, Carol Gillis.
She remembers her last call to Kaylin. “I wanted her to come over and put up patio furniture for me and she says we’ll be over on Sunday. Don’t worry, Blake and I will get the patio furniture up for you. Sunday didn’t come. And what did come on Sunday was something I can never forget,” said Gillis.
Her and the Gillis family’s lives changed forever. Carol told the group she has only one regret.
“Kaylin wasn’t happy with me. And she goes ‘When are we going to sit at the big table?’ I go, well, when I get a bigger table. Or, you know, you move up. And we laughed about it. I really wish a letter said the big person’s table that day. I do,” remembered Carol.
Kaylin’s Grandfather also speaking at the vigil sharing his fondest memory of his granddaughter.
“Without fail, when the night was done, she’d come up the stairs. And I always knew that was Kaylin, to say goodnight. She did it every time without fail and that’s something you could always count on Kaylin to do the thing that would make someone else feel good,” remembered her grandfather.
Kaylin’s immediate family was not available for comment as they were honoring and remembering Kaylin in her favorite place to visit sunny Florida.
