The Kansas City Royals had been rumoured to be looking at the starting-pitching market in free agency and on Tuesday they plunged into that pool and agreed to terms with veteran right-hander Seth Lugo.

According to multiple reports, the Royals and Lugo agreed to a three-year, $45-million contract.

Lugo, 34, was converted to a starter by the Padres last season after spending most of his career in the bullpen for the New York Mets.

Lugo had a 3.57 ERA in 26 starts for the Padres in 2023, with 140 strikeouts and a 115 ERA+.

Royals pitchers posted a combined 5.17 ERA in 2023, third worst in the majors.
