The Tennessee Titans are close to hiring Cincinnati Bengals offensive co-ordinator Brian Callahan as their next head coach, according to multiple reports.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Callahan had his second interview with the Titans on Monday and the team does not intend to allow him to leave without agreeing to a deal.
Callahan has been the Bengals’ offensive co-ordinator since 2019, a run that included a trip to Super Bowl LVI.
The 39-year-old coach is the son of former Raiders head coach and current Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan. There is reportedly a good possibility that Bill will join his son in Tennessee.
Brian was a popular head coaching candidate this off-season, as he also interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers.
The Titans fired head coach Mike Vrabel after six seasons. Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement it was a decision “as difficult as any I’ve made.”
Hired in January 2018, Vrabel went 56-48 overall, including a 2-3 record in the playoffs that included reaching the AFC championship game in the 2019 season as part of three straight playoff berths.
But after two consecutive losing seasons including a 6-11 finish this season, the Titans decided it was time for a change.
