One of the Rockies’ prospects has been named the top shortstop and most valuable player in the California League.
Fresno Grizzlies infielder Ryan Ritter on Tuesday was announced as the winner of the awards, as voted on by the league’s managers. Ritter, who’s listed as the Rockies’ 20th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, slashed .305/.405/.606 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs in 65 games with the Single-A club before earning a promotion to High-A Spokane in July. He now plays for Double-A Hartford.
The 6-foot-2, 200 pounder was selected in the fourth round (116th overall pick) of the 2022 MLB amateur draft out of the University of Kentucky. Ritter, 22, becomes the third Grizzlies player to receive the league MVP, joining Matt Duffy (2015) and Calvin Murray (1999).
Fresno manager Steve Soliz was named the California League Manager of the Year after leading the Grizzlies to a 78-54 record.
In addition, Zach Agnos was named one of two league relievers of the years and Michael Prosecky was tabbed one of four starting pitchers of the year.
Agnos, 23, led the minors with 27 saves and finished with a 5-3 record, 2.06 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings across 47 relief appearances. Prosecky, 22, finished with an 11-7 record in 21 starts with a Single-A-best 2.72 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 109 innings pitched.
