TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Russell Sage College held an overdose simulation drill on Friday for nursing students on its Troy campus. The annual emergency drill included emergency responders and health officials from Rensselaer County.
The older nursing students played the victims and the other nursing students had to triage the patients, talk with emergency officials, and create a response plan. This year’s emergency drill focused on a party gone wrong that included an opioid overdose, injuries, and a missing baby.
“What we train and really focus on is go to the police first. They’re your point of contact,” said Nursing Clinical Faculty Jolene Caresio. “They have to ensure that this is a safe scene. You can’t go running in as a nurse. You want to save the world, you want to protect everybody, you want to fix things. And sometimes you can’t. You have to hold back because if you’re injured now, you’re another victim.”
“God forbid anything were to ever go wrong,” said nursing student Grace Coonan. “Like you have a little bit of experience and a little bit of practice and know what’s going to come next.”
