Ryder Cup 2023 LIVE! Latest scores, updates and results from Sunday singles
[ad_1]
Team Europe will want to avoid any final day-drama in their bid to win back the Ryder Cup as they take a huge lead into the singles matches. Luke Donald’s side have a 10½-5½ advantage over Team USA – no side has other mounted a comeback from that far behind.
Jon Rahm was rested for Saturday’s fourballs action, as the USA won their their first session of the week to close the gap to five points. The Spaniard leads his team out against Scottie Scheffler, who was left in tears yesterday after his record 9&7 foursomes defeat alongside Brooks Koepka.
Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy are also out early for the Europeans, as they look to quickly secure the four points they need for victory. Some fuel was added to the first last night for both teams, as McIlroy and a number of his team-mates clash with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie following some exuberant celebrations on the 18th green. Follow all the action with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog, featuring expert analysis from Matt Majendie in Rome.
Live updates
Rahm vs Scheffler
Hole 10, A/S
Scheffler judges that nicely from distance, lags it up and good enough for him to make par.
Rahm from a very similar distance and he’s got a nice read. Almost an identical putt, bit too much pace though and it’s not coming back from there.
Few feet left for par, cleans that up. Stays all-square.
Rose vs Cantlay
Hole 7, USA 2UP
Rose from distance, might need this just to halve the hole. Missed, Cantlay with a chance to march further in front.
Not his best though, bobbles along and the ball finishes up a couple of feet short. That’s given, both make par.
Lowry vs Spieth
Hole 1, USA 1UP
Spieth hasn’t been particularly impressive this week, but that’s some start!
Gets his approach to stop dead, leave himself just a few feet for birdie and that’s knocked in to take the opening hole.
Rahm vs Scheffler
Hole 10, A/S
What have we just seen?!
Rahm is in the thick stuff, feet miles below the ball and you think he’s just going to have to chip out. Bridge in front of him to deal with.
Baseball swing, throws the kitchen sink at it and he’s found the green… inside Scheffler’s ball!
Rahm vs Scheffler
Hole 10, A/S
Rahm way right off the tee, clatters into a tree and it drops very, very close to the stream. Might just be dry.
Scheffler looking to take advantage, he’s safely onto the putting surface. Still the best part of 50 feet though.
McIlroy vs Burns
Hole 7, Europe 3UP
Burns unable to make his chip from off the green, so McIlroy has this short putt to extend his advantage further.
Huge roars – tells you all you need to know. He is looking imperious this morning.
Hovland vs Morikawa
Hole 9, Europe 2UP
Morikawa going for the green in two, that’s a good leave. Just short of the putting surface, will be pitching straight up to the flag.
Hovland – not quite what he was looking for. Fades out to the right, gets stuck in the rough. Touch chip.
McIlroy vs Burns
Hole 7, Europe 2UP
Stunning from McIlroy!
Pitches it short, rolls up over the slope and trickles down to within five feet of the pin. That for a birdie – so, so good.
Can Burns respond? No, leaves that out to the right.
Update from across the course…
Jon Rahm v Scottie Scheffler – A/S (9)
Viktor Hovland v Collin Morikawa – Europe 2UP (8)
Justin Rose vs Patrick Cantlay – USA 2UP (7)
Rory McIlroy vs Sam Burns – Europe 2UP (6)
Matt Fitzpatrick vs Max Homa – Europe 1UP (5)
Tyrrell Hatton vs Brian Harman – Europe 3UP (4)
Ludvig Aberg vs Brooks Koepka – USA 1UP (3)
Sepp Straka vs Justin Thomas – A/S (1)
Nicolai Hojgaard vs Xander Schauffele – Europe 1UP (1)
Rahm vs Scheffler
Hole 9, A/S
Every time we go back to this top match, it’s Scheffler standing over a short putt.
This one is to tie the match up heading to the back nine – makes it! Neither player has had their best stuff so far, Scheffler will be relieved to be all-square after a sluggish start.
