After their bye, Chiefs emerge as AFC favorite again

Although the Kansas City Chiefs had a bye in Week 10, they were among the NFL’s biggest winners.
“Five games on Sunday ended with a field goal at the final gun, and three of those helped the Chiefs,” wrote the Kansas City Star’s Pete Grathoff. “Thanks to losses by other AFC teams, the Chiefs saw their position in the conference and division races improve on Sunday.”
After the Baltimore Ravens (7-3), Cincinnati Bengals (5-4) and Los Angeles Chargers (4-5) fell, the New York Times simulator noted the Chiefs’ chance of clinching the conference’s No. 1 seed increased to 59%.
Homefield advantage is critical for the Chiefs, who haven’t played in a road playoff game since the 2015-16 season. Over the past five seasons, they’ve made five straight conference championships, lost only two postseason games at Arrowhead Stadium and won two Super Bowls.
Even though the Chiefs (7-2) are first in the AFC, they face a challenging stretch in the second half of the season. In Week 11, Kansas City hosts the Philadelphia Eagles (8-1) in a rematch of Super Bowl LVII. They’ll also host the Buffalo Bills (5-4) in Week 14 and the Bengals in Week 17.
Given the difficulty of the remaining schedule, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Kansas City lost a game or two and needed help to secure the top spot in the conference.
Still, the Chiefs are in a good position and loaded on both sides of the ball. They’re tied for second in the NFL in points allowed (15.9) and fifth in passing yards (264.9). As of Monday, oddschecker gives the defending champions the best Super Bowl (+500) odds.
