The Buffalo Sabres have traded veteran captain Kyle Okposo to the Florida Panthers.
In exchange, the Sabres receive prospect Calle Sjalin and a conditional seventh-round pick.
Okposo, 35, is a 17-year veteran who is playing on a one-year, $2.5 million contract. He has 12 goals and 22 points in 61 games this season and will provide depth on the wings for a Panthers team with Stanley Cup aspirations.
“Kyle is an exceptionally respected veteran who brings leadership and a competitive edge to our team, and we are thrilled to be able to add him to our group,” Panthers GM Bill Zito said.
This is the second significant add made by the Panthers ahead of Friday’s trade deadline after the club acquired scoring winger Vladimir Tarasenko on Wednesday.
The Panthers enter play Friday first in the entire NHL with 90 points.
Sjalin, 24, was a fifth-round pick in 2017 and is currently playing in the AHL. The left-shot defenceman has three assists in 22 games this season.
The seventh-round pick will become a fifth-round pick in 2024 if Florida wins the Stanley Cup.
