The Santa Monica Police Department is evacuating Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier after a man climbed the iconic Ferris wheel and refused to come down.
Witnesses allegedly heard the man make comments about being in possession of a bomb.
As of 3:45 p.m. the situation is ongoing, police said.
Police were working to get everyone off of the pier and no pedestrians were being allowed onto it.
A crisis negotiation team was called to the scene in hopes of getting the man to surrender. Police told KTLA that the man appears to be suffering from some type of mental health crisis and at this point they don’t believe a crime has been committed.
Video from Sky5 showed firefighters using a lift to reach multiple people who were stranded on the Ferris wheel.
Details are limited at this time, but police tell KTLA that the situation could take some time before it is resolved.
