Saratoga and Warren counties begin snowmobile season

EDINBURG, N.Y. (NEWS10) -Snowmobilers are finally riding the trails in both Saratoga and Warren counties as the season has now begun. The season is supposed to start mid-December, but one local snowmobile association says they are ahead of the game compared to last winter.
“We’re about 10-12 days earlier than last year, believe it or not. People just don’t realize it,” said Brian Phillips, Groomer Coordinator for the Saratoga Snowmobile Association.
Over 65 miles of trail is groomed by the Saratoga Snowmobile Association. Phillips says about 90% of it is finally ready.
“We have some rail trails that connect us from Saratoga to South Warren connection. We need a good two feet of snow, heavy snow, to cover those rails and we just don’t have it.”
Trails in Warren County are more accessible than ever thanks to new data in the app Field Maps. The county says this data has been available internally and they decided to turn it into a public resource.
“Look and find all locations on the trails. The neat spots, businesses, places to get a bite to eat, that sort of thing. They can actually plot their location real-time using GPS signal from their phones,” explained Don Lehman, Warren County Director of Public Affairs.
Both snowmobile associations want to remind sledders that though the trails are ready to explore, they should still be cautious and respectful of nature.
“All of our clubs are really dealing with the same thing. With water holes that still aren’t frozen, we’ve got them marked with red flags, red tape in the trees. Thin cover in some areas, especially on hills. There’s still some rocks exposed,” described Jason Halliday, Executive Director of the South Warren Snowmobile Club.
