Team Ireland secured a sixth place finish in the final of the 4×400 metres mixed relay at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Jack Raftery, Sophie Becker, Chris O’Donnell and Sharlene Mawdsley clocked a time of 3:42.

Earlier, Andrew Coscoran booked his place in the men’s 1500m semi-finals.

He finished sixth in his heat to progress and will be back on the track tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Ciara Mageean and Sarah Healy came through their respective heats to qualify for tomorrow’s semi-finals in the women’s 1500 metres.

But Sophie O’Sullivan missed out on progression despite running a personal best.

Rugby

Ireland beat England 29-10 in their Rugby World Cup warm-up clash at the Aviva Stadium.

Keith Earls was among the try scorers on the occasion of his 100th cap.

Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose, James Lowe and Mack Hansen also crossed over for Andy Farrell’s side.

England ended the game with 14 players after the 52nd minute dismissal of Billy Vunipola.

Premier League

Reigning champions Manchester City are on course to go two from two in this season’s Premier League.

Julian Alvare’s goal has given them a 1-0 lead over Newcastle approaching half-time at the Etihad.

Earlier today, Tottenham were 2-0 winners over Manchester United.

Liverpool overcame a second half red card for Alexis MacAllister to beat Bournemouth 3-1 at Anfield.

Brighton enjoyed a 4-1 win against Wolves and Brentford were 3-nil winners over Fulham.

Women’s World Cup

Sweden beat Australia in the Women’s World Cup third -place playoff this morning.

The Swedes claimed bronze with a 2-0 win over the Matildas in Brisbane.

Golf

Rory McIlroy is two shots off the lead approaching the end of his third round at the BMW Championship.

With two holes to play, he’s eight-under-par and two shots adrift of joint leaders Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Brian Harman.

Seamus Power is back on 12-over.

Gabriella Cowley is the leader on six-under par after day three of the ISPS Handa Invitational at Galgorm Castle in Antrim.

Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow are both two-over par.

In the men’s event, Daniel Brown holds a six-shot lead on 14-under par. Tom McKibbin is best of the Irish on level par.
