Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm warnings for several areas west of Calgary Monday evening, which have now ended, after heavy rain and hail hit a wide swath of southern Alberta and knocked out electricity in some areas.
“Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms capable of producing up to nickel size hail and heavy rain,” the agency said in a statement at 7:29 p.m.
The warnings ended around 8:45 p.m. as the storms moved through.
Attendees at the Canmore Folk Music Festival were among those caught in the storm, which produced hail in the area and knocked out power.
Fortis Alberta also reported outages in other areas Monday evening, including parts of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and a rural area between Carstairs and Cremona.
