A man is dead and a woman is seriously injured after a shooting in Toronto’s west end on Thursday evening, police say.
Toronto police were called to the area of St. Clair Avenue West at Northcliffe Boulevard for reports of a shooting at about 7:35 p.m., according to Duty Insp. Maher Abdel-Malik.
When officers arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was shot in the abdomen and the woman was shot in the leg, Abdel-Malik said.
Toronto paramedics rushed both victims to hospital.
The man was pronounced dead in hospital. The woman was listed in stable condition as of 10:30 p.m.
Police are looking for one suspect, however no description has been released. Earlier, police said the suspect fled on foot. A firearm was recovered.
“There is no risk to public safety at this time,” Abdel-Malik said.
Police have not determined if there was any relationship between the victims and suspect and have not determined a motive for the shooting.
Officers are canvassing the area for surveillance camera video and asking witnesses to come forward. Anyone who may have seen anything is asked to call police.
Police closed the intersection to traffic as they investigated on Thursday night. There was a heavy police presence in the area.
The homicide unit has been notified and detectives are expected to take over the investigation.
