Police have launched an investigation after a man and woman were shot at a Walmark checkout in Michigan.
Two men fled after the shooting in Wyoming, Michigan, on Sunday evening.
Just before the shooting, there was a confrontation between the male victim and two other suspects. One of the two men fired at least 10 shots, hitting the victims, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Fox 17 in west Michigan reported.
According to Lieutenant. Andrew Koeller, the shooting occurred in the checkout area at about 6 p.m. When police arrived at the store, they found the injured woman, who was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital. While police were investigating the shooting, the male victim arrived at a hospital.
Police believe that the woman was an innocent bystander and had nothing to do with the confrontation.
The Wyoming Police Department said in a statement: “Officers located a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound inside the store. The female was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“While investigating this incident, a male suffering from a gunshot wound arrived at an area hospital; this individual was found to be related to this incident.
“The suspect was armed with a handgun and described as an individual wearing a black parka-style coat with fur around the collar of the hood, a red sweatshirt, and dark pants. A second person was seen with the suspect during this incident, this individual was wearing a black sweatshirt with white lettering across the chest, a black mask, and light-colored pants. Walmart has been evacuated and will be closed for business while police investigate this incident.”
“It should be noted that this appeared to be a targeted attack toward the male; additionally, the female was found to be an innocent bystander struck by gunfire. Currently, there are no suspects related to this incident in police custody.
“The Wyoming Police Investigative Division and Forensic Science Unit continue to investigate this incident.”
WOOD-TV reported Koeller as saying that the “targeted individual” had an “interaction” with two two suspects near the check-out lines.
The woman “was just in the background of the shooting,” Koeller said.
“This is a brazen public attack. This is not something that we would tolerate. This is not something that should occur and we encourage the public to give any information in help solving this brazen crime and, like I mentioned, unfortunately, an innocent bystander was struck. Two people were struck and that’s completely unfortunate,” Koeller said.
Police are not yet sure what led up to the shooting or if the individuals are known to each other and are reviewing CCTV footage.
There was a separate shooting in an Arkansas incident that left one man dead and a police officer injured, THV11 Digital reported.
The shooting occurred just after 8:00 p.m. at a Walmart Supercenter on Baseline Road, Little Rock on Sunday night.
Officers were alerted to reports of shots fired at the store and on arrival at the scene they found two people with injuries. One of the victims was suffering from a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital where they later died.
An officer at the scene was also injured and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
