(KRON) – Assistant Police Chief Paul Joseph is set to become the interim police chief for the San Jose Police Department.

He is currently second in command at the department, serving as interim—Joseph and the department plan on him beginning his new role next week.

Joseph has spent the last 30 years with the San Jose Police Department as he joined in 1994.

After only two and a half years with the San Mateo Police Department, Joseph became the Assistant Police Chief in 2021. Joseph has supported the current police chief Anthony Mata.

Mata announced he was leaving the department in January. Mata is embarking on a new role with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Joseph and Mata have pushed for more transparency and community engagement in the department.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan says Joseph is a capable leader and believes he can step into this interim role. Mayor Mahan says he leaves behind a solid foundation for both interim Chief Joseph and the upcoming permanent police chief.
