Hamilton police say a 31-year-old man is in custody after hurting three special constables while trying to escape the city courthouse.

Hamilton Police Service spokesperson Jackie Penman told CBC Hamilton a man sentenced at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Thursday tried to flee at roughly 10:30 a.m.

He was sentenced to four months for mischief under $5,000, publicizing intimate images, criminal harassment and voyeurism, she said in an email.

During his attempted escape, three special constables in the courtroom were hurt and eventually taken to hospital.

“Each have multiple injuries,” Penman said.

Dave Thompson, superintendent with the Hamilton Paramedic Service, said the officers were in stable condition and speaking with paramedics on their way to the hospital.

Penman said the accused is now facing three charges for assaulting a peace officer and is facing a charge for escaping lawful custody.
