Did Sri Lanka Take The Worst Review in Cricket History? | Read Scoops

In the 1st T20I on the Sri Lanka tour of Bangladesh, we witnessed some amazing cricket and mad hitting in particular, as both teams scored 200+ and the visitors won by a narrow margin of just 3 runs, getting across the line in a nail-biting finish. The last over was bowled by former Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanka, but the highlight of the game was a DRS review taken in the final over.

Stand-in captain for the day, Charith Asalanka, took a review for LBW on the second last delivery, against batter Shoriful Islam. And even the umpire was chuckling after the TV replays showed that the ball was pitching outside the off-stump and going on to miss even the fifth or sixth stump, had those existed. Pathetic review, really!

Rubbish Sri Lanka review goes viral!

Sri Lanka scored 206/3 in their 20 overs led mostly by Sadeera Samarawickrama, who was left unbeaten on 61* at the end of the Sri Lankan innings. Asalanka also contributed with 44(21)* and at the half-time stage, not many thought that the hosts would stand a chance, especially since they lost quite a few early wickets during the chase.

There were immediate jokes on social media looking at this waste of a review from the Sri Lanka side, including one user who said, β€œSri Lanka should be once again penalised for taking this review.” He was referring to the fact that the Lankans were already penalised for a slow over-rate, which meant they had to have one more player inside the ring in the final over.

In the chase, the hosts were 68/4 but there was some rearguard action to help save them. Mahmudullah scored 54(31) and then Jaker Ali played a gem of an innings, scoring 68(34) before holing out to the long off fielder on the third ball of the final over. From there, it was all over for the Bangladeshi side, as they ended up falling short by 3 runs.

Sri Lanka chanced their luck on the fifth ball with that ridiculous review but the only thing we’d think was a right move from it would be the fact that they slowed down the game and took the momentum away from the batters. Needing 5 runs from the final ball, Taskin Ahmed only managed an inside edge and a single, as the Lankans took a 1-0 lead in the series.
