A teenage boy has died following a medical event in the pool area at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex on Monday, a city spokesperson says.

David Driedger, manager of corporate communications for the City of Winnipeg, said by email Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a medical incident involving a patron who was found unresponsive at the recreation complex at approximately 4:39 p.m. on Monday.

Police said the teen was taken to hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead.

Police say they are waiting for autopsy results to determine what happened.

Earlier Tuesday, a notification on the city facility’s website said the pool was closed until further notice.

Driedger said the complex was closed early yesterday, but resumed services this morning.

“As per our procedures, we are conducting an internal review and debriefing with facility staff,” Driedger said. “We don’t have any additional information to share at this time.”

Public health inspectors with Manitoba Health are investigating to ensure the facility was in compliance with the Swimming Pools and Other Water Recreational Facilities Regulation, a provincial spokesperson said.
