OSLO:

Norwegian telecoms operator Telenor hopes to decide on a strategic solution for its Pakistan business before year-end, the company’s CEO said on Wednesday.

“We are in contact with many parties now, which is why I say I’m rather optimistic that we will by the end of the year have a final solution,” CEO Sigve Brekke said.

The three options are a merger similar to what Telenor has already done for other parts of its Asia businesses, a sale, or to continue but in a different operational model, he added.

Earlier, Federal IT and Telecom Secretary, Hassan Nasir Jamy said that the government is taking vigorous steps to provide maximum facilities to the telecom sector.

During a meeting with Telenor Group Head of Asia Borre Furberg on Friday, the secretary said that caretaker IT Minister Dr Umar Saif had special interest in promoting the IT and telecom sector in Pakistan. He pointed out that the recently approved infrastructure-sharing framework and the proposed spectrum-sharing mechanism were important milestones that would reduce operational costs of telecom operators.
