How Tesla Autopilot got grounded

April 11: Tensions rise between Tesla, NTSB

While investigating a 2018 fatal crash involving Autopilot, NTSB officials ask Tesla to stop sharing details publicly about unfinished investigations. The company had been cooperating with authorities on the crash investigation, but in a call to discuss the investigation, Tesla CEO Elon Musk abruptly hangs up on Sumwalt, the nation’s top transportation safety investigator said.

Sumwalt sends a letter to Musk the next day revoking Tesla’s status as party to the agency’s safety investigation — meaning Tesla will be privy to less information during the investigation.
