The Madison Theatre closes to the public

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -February 25 was the last day that The Madison Theatre was open to the public. Advertised as Upstate New York’s only dine-in theatre, moviegoers had one more chance to enjoy both a movie and a meal.
“Everyone in this neighborhood enjoyed Madison Theatre. That’s why I moved in next door. I worked there. I loved being able to come in, have those passes and be able to watch free movies and eat popcorn,” said Local Resident, Jonathon Booth.
Inside The Madison Theatre, patrons came to not only to see the latest movie releases, but to enjoy a final drink with friends at the bar. Employees said it’s this type of atmosphere that made Pine Hills feel like home.
“For me it was a great college side hustle on the weekend. Great way to spend my Saturdays and Fridays,” said Bartender, Will Christiano.
“We all know each other really well. It’s been very nice getting to know people, getting to know the community, and people we work with,” added Concession Staff, Sienna Stewart.
The Madison is not the only theatre to say goodbye as the nearby Landmark Spectrum 8 closed its doors just a few days prior. And with the College of Saint Rose also closing this summer, local residents are worried for their neighborhood businesses.
“I really hope someone else is able to take this up. Keep it functioning as a theatre. I really enjoy being able to come here,” stated Katy Carroll.
NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski spoke with councilmembers representing Pine Hills who believe the closure is temporary as this is not the first time the theatre has gone out of business.
“I worked with the mayor and Capitalize Albany and the Trinity Group to really revive it, bring it back to full operation,” explained Albany Common Council Member, Owusu Anane.
“Owning a small business is always a challenge but there is definitely a big desire. This is a unique theatre and it’s great that there is interest,” described Majority Leader of the Albany Common Council, Ginnie Farrell.
The Madison Theatre did not cite a specific reason for the closure. In a Facebook post, the theatre said that they will remain open for private events only as they go through their change.
