Summer is road trip season and we want to help you make the most of it. The counties outside of London are full of hidden gems, so we’re asking the people who know their county best to give their top three list of must-dos.

“Summertime is really when all the natural beauty comes together between our parks, our beaches, the landscapes,” said Mark Perrin, the executive director for Tourism Sarnia-Lambton.

“[It’s a] great place to just come and unwind from from any of the bigger cities and and spend some time just enjoying everything that summer is about. The sunshine, the water — and a little bit more relaxation.”

1. Ontario’s Blue Coast Beaches and Grand Bend

There are more than 170 kilometres of shoreline along Lake Huron and the St. Clair River in Lambton County. It has three Blue Flag beaches, a top rating for beaches, which are Canatara Beach & Park, Ipperwash Beach and Grand Bend.

Grand Bend is a beautiful area and a great attraction with shopping and nearby Pinery Provincial Park, Perrin said.

“Everyone should take a trip to Grand Bend in the summer and really enjoy the scenery. The beach and waterfront are great for people looking for that getaway to escape, get relaxation and dip their toe in the sand.”

“It’s just a nice vibe down there,” he said. “It’s that Caribbean vibe.”

After the beach, Perrin encourages road trippers to check out the open air restaurants, listen to live music and poke around the always popular flea markets, he said.

2. The village of Oil Springs

One of the biggest things to see in the village of Oil Springs is the 100-year-old oil wells that are still in operation, said Adam Veen, the digital marketing coordinator for the county.

“They’re utilizing their own ingenuity and resources to pump oil in the same way that they have for the last 160 years,” he said.

There are driving tours where you can see the main oil field workers still operating the lines, he said. “Everything is still historical, like a piece in time.”

The village is home to the Oil Museum of Canada with displays and demonstrations, including how the first oil well in North America was discovered and the global impact during the industrial revolution.

“There’s a ton to learn in a very small space which is great opportunity,” he said.

3. Cheers to the Coast

Take a designated driver on this tour through Lambton County!

“We’re one of the hottest regions in the area for beer, wine and cider producers,” said Perrin. ” We have 14 different places where you can enjoy your favourite beverages.”

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton has created a Cheers to the Coast trail map to make it easy to find what suits your taste. Some makers are in rural settings like farms, but others are in more urban buildings.

“We do work with different tour operators to offer safe driving options. So you can customize your stops,” Perrin said.
