This upcoming SUV, potentially named the Toyota FJ Cruiser or Land Cruiser FJ, will share its platform and powertrain options with the recently launched Toyota Hilux Champ pickup truck. The IMV 0 platform, upon which both vehicles are built, has a rich history, forming the foundation for iconic models like the Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova.
While the Hilux Champ boasts a single-cab layout and customizable options, the forthcoming SUV will retain the boxy, retro aesthetic with the addition of premium features. Sharing the 2,750mm wheelbase with the Innova Crysta and Fortuner, the new SUV is expected to offer both two- and three-row seating configurations, catering to diverse consumer needs.
The interior design will borrow the Hilux Champ’s functional layout while incorporating significant upgrades. This includes the use of higher-quality materials, a larger touchscreen infotainment system, and an array of advanced technological features.

The IMV 0 platform offers flexibility in terms of powertrain options, allowing the new SUV to accommodate diesel engines ranging from 2.4-liters to 2.8-liters, alongside a 2.7-liter petrol engine currently used in the Indian Fortuner.
Given the recent cancellation of the C-SUV project codenamed 340D, experts believe this smaller Fortuner SUV could be a strategic fit for the Indian market. Additionally, the existing infrastructure for the IMV platform, localized for nearly two decades in India, could facilitate a smooth introduction.
With the on-road prices of the Fortuner exceeding Rs 60 lakh in some Indian cities, there seems to be ample space for a more affordable option positioned between the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner. While the business case appears promising, the final decision on introducing this SUV in India remains with Toyota.
Toyota’s New SUV That Will Be Cheaper Than Fortuner
While the vehicle in bound to launch in major international markets like the USA, Europe, and Japan, its arrival in India remains highly unlikely. This is because right now Toyota is focusing on Suzuki-derived models to boost market share and volume in India.
However, we think that this SUV could be a perfect fit for the Indian market as there is high demand of SUV’s in India. Also with this car Toyota can enter the highly competitive mid-sized SUV segment in India with a product of their own, which sits above the Urban Cruiser Hyryder (badge-engineered Maruti Grand Vitara) but below the Fortuner.
