2024 Toyota 86 Review: Prices, Specs, and Photos
[ad_1]
Few cars are as genuinely fun to drive as the 2024 Toyota GR86. This low-slung coupe is a blast to drive with brilliant handling, sharp steering, and just enough power to be interesting. Yeah, we think the GR86 is quick enough. It’s a 9 on our scale.
Certainly not. The GR86 is proud of its rear-wheel-drive platform. A Torsen limited-slip rear end helps keep the rear wheels in check.
How fast is the Toyota GR86?
It is not the most rapid sports car, but with 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from a Subaru-designed 2.4-liter flat-4, the GR86 muscles its way to 60 mph in a fleet 6.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox. Opt for the automatic and it’s closer to 6.6 seconds.
Power comes on reasonably low, though the GR86’s flat-4 loves to rev its way to redline. You’ll find a usable 3,700-rpm torque peak, which is impressive for a naturally aspirated car. Just don’t look for a snarling engine note. The flat-4 is a bit wheezy and coarse.
We especially like how well the 6-speed manual gearbox can be hustled through gears. The optional automatic barks off quick shifts and features paddles, but newly standard crash-avoidance tech with the manual means there’s really no reason to skip it.
Where the GR86 really shines is in its balanced handling. Its front strut and rear multi-link setup is nothing groundbreaking, but everything is tuned brilliantly. The standard 17-inch wheels provide a slightly softer ride than the available 18s. Either way, it’s not hard to coax the rear end loose when pushed. Simply flick the steering wheel and you’ll find yourself experiencing easily controlled oversteer. But the GR86 is equally easy to catch, which is why it’s such an approachable small car.
Strong braking is another asset. We’ve yet to drive one with the new Brembo setup, though odds are it’ll be even better.
At highway speeds, the GR86 is a bit loud inside, but its ride is tolerable and its steering settles in nicely.
