A transport truck caught fire Tuesday morning, causing lane closures on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in Hamilton.

The Ministry of Transportation said the Fort Erie-bound QEW at Northshore Boulevard was fully closed as of 11 a.m. The incident occurred at Eastport Drive, according to the ministry’s 511 service.

The ministry said a separate collision nearby, on the Toronto-bound QEW at Woodward Avenue, has also closed several lanes as of 11:40 a.m.

Emil Istrofor said he was on his way to Stoney Creek on Tuesday, about to get on the Skyway Bridge lane, when he saw a big ball of smoke.

He said traffic was moving slowly in one lane past the smoking 18-wheeler when “there was a big boom.”

Hamilton Fire Department told CBC Hamilton in an email the “diesel tank ruptured” and ignited the trailer’s cargo, which was pink insulation. It said the fire is now under control.

It is unclear if either incident has resulted in injuries.
